Resident / Fellow Paid Time Off Policy

All PGY1 and PGY2 residents will receive 15 weekdays (3 weeks) paid time off.

All PGY3 and above (residents and fellows) will receive 20 weekdays (4 weeks) paid time off.

All residents/fellows will receive 4 personal days.  These are usually taken during the holidays or may be taken as an emergency (call-in) day.

Vacation and personal time may be used in hours, days or weeks as needed/requested.  A vacation request form must be completed and approved/signed by the section director of the service during the month you would be taking the time off.  If possible, please request time off 4 weeks prior to the dates requested.  After the form has been approved by the section director, it must be forwarded to the residency coordinator (Bev Jarrett, MS128).

Paid time off must be taken during an academic year (Jul 1 - Jun 30) and cannot be accumulated from one year to the next.  No payment will be made for unused paid time off at the completion of training.

Residents should try to limit the time off taken during any given month to one week or less.  You should not, if at all possible, take time off during a rotation that may only be scheduled once during your residency (ie. neuropathology, forensics, molecular/cytogenetics).

Residents and fellows are allowed 4 days per academic year to attend meetings.  The exception to this would be if you are a presenter.

If a resident is away from service for any of the following reasons, this will be designated "Business Leave" and will not be counted as vacation or meeting days off:

For senior residents taking time off for interviews, there is a form in the resident's room that should be completed as soon as possible when you know the interview dates.  The time requested, as with vacation/meetings, will need to be approved by the section director of the service you would be on for the month.  The form should then be forwarded to the residency coordinator.
