IU General Benefits: http://medicine.iu.edu/residents/resident-and-fellow-information/
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides each resident with professional development funds each academic year that can be used in a variety of ways. The money may be used to purchase books, journal subscriptions, and to pay dues. The funds can also be used to defray travel expenses or to pay board examination fees.

Allocations are made according to the following schedule:
First Year
$2250 for basic pathology book, other books, meetings, or computer software.
Second Year
$3250 ($1000 of which is provided for purchase of a laptop computer).
Third Year
$1750 for books and meetings.
Fourth Year
$2000
* During the 3rd – 4th years, residents may apply for an additional $1000 to be used for meetings or for board exam fees. This $1000 is available only once during these two years.
* If residents are speakers for a poster or platform presentation, they receive an additional $500 for each poster of platform.
* Meals are provided for residents during call weeks.
Kiana Fossett, located in the administration office MS128, maintains the records of all transactions and can give residents theiraccount balances when requested.
Requests for books, journal subscriptions, and dues can be submitted to Kiana. The invoice for subscription or dues is placed in the organizer at her desk labeled “Subscriptions/Dues”. Book order forms are available at her desk and completed forms are deposited in the organizer labeled “Book Orders”. Orders are placed once per week (on Friday) and it usually takes 3-5 business days for a book order to arrive.
Books may also be purchased at the campus bookstore. The resident will need to pick up a credit card from Kiana to make these purchases. Both the credit card and the receipt should be returned to her as soon as possible. If the books are purchased directly by a resident, the original reciept must be provided must be provided to Kiana. It may take 10-14 days to a reimbursement check.
For laptop purchases, residents can bring ordering information to Kiana (item and stock numbers) so she can place the order. If a computer is purchased directly by a resident, the original receipt must be provided to Kiana. It will take approximately 10-14 days to get a reimbursement check.
Residents may also use professional development funds for travel to national or international meetings. The office encourages travelers to confirm their account balance prior to making arrangements. A travel form must also be completed prior to travel. You can obtain this form from Janet Brown in the administration office. In order to receive reimbursement for airline fares, hotel bills, or food during travel, original receipts must be turned in to Janet so that she can process the check request.
NOTE: All unused funds will carry over to the next year. Any balance left at the completion of the residency program will revert to the Department.
