Sample Curriculum for the Ph.D. in Pathology

The Indiana BioMedical Gateway (IBMG) is the expected route for entry into the Ph.D. program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The first semester curriculum will include the IBMG core courses, and the second semester will include electives selected as described below.

*A total of 90 credits is needed for degree completion; this total must include at least 35 credits of didactic course work and at least 45 credits of C859 Research in Pathology

**Electives chosen from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The IU School of Medicine basic science departments, and other IUPUI basic science departments will vary depending on the research interests of the individual student.

Part-time Study

Part-time study in research-based pathology degree programs , although not recommended, is permitted. Many students choose this option due to financial and personal issues that preclude them from studying full-time. University guidelines mandate that all course work for the M.S. be completed within 5 years prior to graduation, and all course work for the Ph.D. be completed within 7 years of the doctoral qualifying examination. It is possible to meet these requirements through part-time study. One semester of full-time enrollment is required for the M.S., and two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment are required for the Ph.D.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine routinely accepts graduate-level science course credits earned by the student before admission to the program. At IUPUI, students enroll under a status called "Graduate Non-Degree" while other universities may have another name for this status. The number of credits that may be earned under this status is limited by the University, and completion of courses under this status does not guarantee admission to a Pathology graduate program.
